Short sleep duration predicts an increased risk of being overweight / obese in adults. Chaput and colleagues suggest that there may be optimal sleeping hours at which body weight is regulated. They found that short sleep duration reduced the level of circulating leptin compared to that predicted by fat mass. Read the paper for free to find out more about these findings.

Highlights


Lost dollars and workdays-obesity with cardiometabolic disease costs US more. A new study by Sullivan et al. finds that compared with normal-weight individuals with various cardiometabolic conditions, those who are overweight miss more workdays and expend up to several thousand dollars more on medical care. Wider waists and low self esteem correlate with increased insulin resistance in overweight African-American youth. These findings suggest measures to boost self-confidence together with changes in diet and physical activity could help prevent the early onset of diabetes in this at-risk population.
